Roulette Beginner Guide: Overview
Roulette has a distinguished history in casino gaming, being one of the most instantly recognizable games and pretty much synonymous with casino culture. You only have to look at the websites of any online casino on the web and a graphic of a Roulette wheel is likely to be a prominent image greeting you!
The focus of this classic table game is its iconic, elegant wheel from which the game derives its name – Roulette means ‘small wheel' in French – which lies horizontally at one end of the playing surface. This is the random number selecting device by which the outcome of the game is determined, with the wheel's rim segmented into separate pockets numbered from ‘0' to ‘36' in a non-sequential order. Each number is allocated a background colour of black or red, bar ‘0' which is traditionally set on a green background.
The simple aim of Roulette is to bet on the outcome of where a small ball introduced into the spinning wheel will come to rest in one of the numbered pockets. The ball is always spun into the wheel's bowl in the opposite direction from the wheel's rotation, and the result is announced once the wheel has come to rest.
Betting in Roulette takes place before a spin of the wheel and is done by placing a selected value of chip(s) into a specially designated pattern of boxes on the table to indicate your prediction of where the ball will ultimately land. Different selections and combinations are possible offering the player different odds according to the chance of the bet being won.
