About Us — Who We Are and How We Review UK Online Casinos
We’re an independent UK online casino review site. James Awland started it in 2015, and a small editorial team runs it today. The rule we work to: we only recommend casinos we’d use ourselves.
Meet James — Founder & Editor-in-Chief
I’m James. I studied Mathematical Sciences at King’s College London. That’s where I got curious about odds and probabilities, and the curiosity stuck. It turned into a question I couldn’t stop asking: which UK online casinos are really worth a player’s time and money?
I launched bestcasino.co.uk in 2015 to answer that question honestly. Over a decade later, that’s still the job. I read the T&Cs, check the UKGC register, play the games, and then write up what I’d want a friend to tell me before signing up.
Find me on X (@JamesAwland) if you want to get in touch directly.
Our Editorial Team
Reviewing UK online casinos properly is too much ground for one person. Since 2015, the site has grown into a small editorial team where different people handle different sides of each review.
- Project management – keeping reviews, updates, and new pages on schedule
- Product development – SEO, content strategy, and site structure
- Sales – operator relationships and commercial partnerships, kept separate from editorial
- Compliance – UKGC and ASA/CAP rule checks on every page before it goes live
- Tech – site performance, template updates, shortcode and data systems
- Design – page layouts, images, and visual consistency
- Research – operator fact-checks, licence verification, and data gathering
- Content writing – reviews, guides, and blog posts
We’ll add individual bios as team members opt in to being named publicly. For now, James is the public editor of everything on the site.
How We Review UK Online Casinos
We don’t write reviews from operator press releases. Every casino we cover goes through the same hands-on testing before it earns a spot on the site:
- We sign up, deposit real money, and play the games, not just take screenshots of the cashier.
- We contact customer support as regular players and rate response speed, accuracy, and tone.
- We follow through to a real cashout before we’ll say an operator pays out as advertised.
- We retest every ranked operator every six months, with monthly data refreshes in between.
As we test, we score each operator against the eight criteria we use for our homepage ranking:
-
Licence & Security
We verify every operator against the UKGC public register. Then we confirm SSL encryption and responsible-gambling tool availability. If an operator isn’t UKGC-licensed, it doesn’t appear on the site.
-
Welcome Bonus
We read the full welcome-offer T&Cs and flag anything that matters to a UK player: wagering requirements (capped at 10x under January 2026 rules), maximum conversion limits, excluded payment methods, game weighting, expiry windows, and max-bet rules.
-
Casino Games
We check the game library in detail: how many slots, table games, and jackpots are on offer, which providers supply them, and whether the casino has any exclusives worth calling out.
-
RTP Rates
We play the slots and table games we feature and confirm the in-game RTPs match what the provider publishes. Operators can run a slot at a lower-than-default RTP, and not every casino uses the highest version available. When that happens, we say so.
-
Live Casino
We log into the live casino section and check which studios are integrated (Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live, Playtech). We test a range of tables for stability and stream quality, and we confirm the minimum and maximum stakes available to UK players.
-
Mobile Casino
We test every operator on iOS and Android, covering both the browser site and any dedicated app. Load times, navigation, mobile payment methods, and whether you can still play the full desktop game library on phone.
-
Payment Options
We make a real deposit and a real withdrawal through each payment method we recommend: PayPal, Visa, Paysafecard, bank transfer, and others depending on the operator. We time the withdrawals, note any per-transaction processing limits, and flag when a payment method is excluded from bonus eligibility.
-
Casino Software
We check which providers power the games (NetEnt, Microgaming, Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play, ELK Studios, and others), whether the software is independently audited (eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI), and whether the operator’s gambling software is built in-house or licensed from a proprietary provider.
Editorial Independence and Affiliate Disclosure
Like most UK online casino review sites, we earn a commission when readers sign up to an operator through our links. That’s how the site is funded.
We run with a small editorial team and a separate commercial team. The editors handle reviews and rankings, using the criteria set out above. The commercial team manages operator partnerships and affiliate relationships. Each side keeps to its own work.
Every operator we cover holds a UKGC licence. From there, where a casino sits on any of our lists comes down to how the wider review reads – bonus terms, payment options, support quality, and the rest of the criteria above. Where a casino doesn’t meet our standards, the review reflects that.
Where we include affiliate links, we’ll say so.

Responsible Gambling
Gambling is entertainment, not a way to make money or clear debt. There’s always risk involved, and for some people it becomes a problem. Every page on this site links to responsible gambling tools because that message matters more than any bonus comparison.
We link to BeGambleAware, GamStop, GamCare, and the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) throughout the site. If any of those organisations can help, please use them.
Play Responsibly
Gambling should be entertaining — never a way to make money or resolve financial difficulties. Set a budget and time limit before you play, never chase losses, and step away when it stops being fun.
If you feel gambling is affecting your life, free and confidential help is available now:
